Advisory Message from Sandy Springs Police Department

 

The burglary suspect in the Branches area of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody, Jordan Zachary, who was driving the black Ford Expedition, has been arrested. He turned himself in. Please continue to call 911 when you see suspicious activity in your area.  This information is from David Johns of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Twin Branch Burglaries: Be on the Lookout for two identified cars...

On October 6, the Sandy Springs Police Department reported they have had a high number of burglaries in the Twin Branch subdivision. This is just south of Dunwoody limits on Mt. Vernon Hwy - it cuts through all the way to Spalding Drive and comes out near Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. Residents have reported seeing two cars:  A 2001 Dodge Stratus with Georgia tag AHX2619 and a 2002 Honda Odyssey with Georgia tag AEX5885. There are no warrants for the registered owners yet. Our own Dunwoody Police Department asks that if you see either of these vehicles, or anyone acting suspicious, please call 911 to have an officer check them out.

 

From Dunwoody Police Department: Interactive Defense Roll-Out

                 The Dunwoody Police Department (DPD) would like to inform you of a new system that was rolled out to the City residents on 10/4/2010. The DPD has been testing Interactive Defense, which is a web based program that will greatly increase the communication between the Dunwoody Police and the citizens of Dunwoody. Some of the highlights of this program are:
 

·         Individual accounts for every resident to receive emails directly from Dunwoody Officers.

 

·         Residents will receive wanted person, missing person and suspicious person lookouts directly to their email or text messages. If someone has information, they can share it, anonymously if they choose to, directly with the detective/officer that is handling the case.

 

·         Residents will be able to enter and maintain their own vacation watches for their homes. These requests will go directly to the officers on the street. Residents will have the option of receiving text message or email alerts as the officers are able to check their home.

 

·         Residents can enter their serial numbers into their "File Cabinet" which stores them into a secure database. This information can be recalled later, by the owner, from any internet connection. This is extremely useful in cases such as burglary/theft (for police reports), fire or storm damage (for insurance reports).

 

·         Residents will be able to communicate with each other across the city and build their own "community" sites, if interested, for their neighborhoods.

 

Dunwoody is the first city in the nation to utilize this system. It is believed it will increase the amount of information that can be released to the residents without endless emails being passed around from neighbor to neighbor. Everyone will know the information is current because they will receive it directly from the Dunwoody Police Department. If the resident chooses to receive text messages, then they will receive the information as quickly as it is entered into the system.

 

This program will be rolled out in phases so not all of the features are available yet. There are also plans for more features to be added to the program.

Be On the Lookout (BOLO) Update

Since 9/22/2010, the Dunwoody Police Department (DPD) has been searching for suspects (one White male and three Black males) in a black Ford Expedition, Georgia Tag 1178 YH who have committed multiple burglaries in the area. The driver has been identified as Jordan Zachary. Detective Boyer has obtained warrants on this subject for the burglaries. The DPD asks everyone to remain vigilant in their awareness. If you see suspicious vehicles or people in your neighborhood, please call 911 to have an officer check them out. The DPD has stated they will notify everyone when Zachary is in custody and/or when they have more details.

Online program lets Dunwoody residents report problems

 
Dunwoody has joined a pilot program with an outside website that lets citizens and businesses in the city report non-emergency problems online.
 

The SeeClickFix.com site takes reports of potholes, graffiti or traffic safety issues and places them on a map for everyone to see. The site allows anyone to create watch areas for themselves, that will alert them by e-mail when new issues are reported.

The Dunwoody Police Department is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency and Safe Kids Georgia to conduct Operation Pill Drop. This is a prescription drug take-back event where the public can dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to keep them out of the wrong hands. "Prescription drug abuse is the Nation's fastest-growing drug problem, and take-back events like this one are an indispensable tool for reducing the threat that the diversion and abuse of these drugs pose to public health," said Director of National Drug Control Policy Gil Kerlikowske. "The Federal/state/and local collaboration represented in this initiative is key in our national efforts to reduce pharmaceutical drug diversion and abuse." On September 25th, we invite Dunwoody residents to bring their unwanted medication to the front lobby of our police department from 10AM-2PM, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 100.
 
We cannot accept needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment and hydrogen peroxide. Unintentional poisoning from prescription medications is on the rise. Every year, over 2 million poison exposures are reported in the United States. In 2009, over 51% of reported poisonings in Georgia involved children ages 5 and under. Operation Pill Drop offers the public a free and convenient option for disposing of their prescription and over-the-counter medications to protect their families and the environment.

Dunwoody PD Press Release: Aggravated Assault

The Dunwoody Police Department is currently investigating an Aggravated Assault that occurred at the Northchase Apartments, 6800 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The incident occurred at approximately 01:46 hours. Two females were approached by a black male outside their apartment. When the suspect pulled out a pistol, the two fled inside the apartment. The suspect followed them in, and was confronted by the resident, 50 year old Keith Holt. The suspect fired his pistol twice, striking Mr. Holt once in the leg. He was transported to Grady Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The suspect was a black male, 30-35 years of age, shaved head/bald, wearing a white T-Shirt and baggy blue jeans. He was armed with a black revolver. He was last seen getting in to a navy blue Ford Mustang and fleeing the scene. There was also a passenger in the car. The Dunwoody Police Department is searching for Torrence D. Booker (aliases: "T-Time" and "Chico"), accused of using a vehicle stolen out of Dunwoody to transport other stolen items from other car break-ins and burglaries to various pawn shops. The suspect is described as being male, Black, 5'11", 195 pounds, with a tattoo on the right arm ("Jesus"), tattoo on the left arm looks like "Sales", and tattoo on left chest. Armed Robbery, Chase Bank at Publix Shopping Center

Incident: Armed Robbery

Location: 5552 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA

The Dunwoody Police Department is investigating an Armed Robbery that occurred at the Chase Bank, 5552 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, at approximately 1015 hours this morning.

Four black males entered the bank and demanded money. Two of the males were armed with pistols, and one was armed with an assault rifle. All of them were wearing dark clothing, ski masks and plastic bags over their hands. They were between 5’5”-5’10”. They left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

Missing Person Has Returned

I just want to extend a sincere “Thank You” to everyone that responded to the e-mail that I sent out last week.  I had numerous offers for search parties, calling posts, etc… 

 

I just wanted to let you know that she has returned and that foul play is not suspected.  The case remains under investigation.

The Dunwoody Police Department is trying to locate a missing teenage girl that was last seen at 0700 hours this morning. Catherine Hoyos, a 15 year old white female, was dropped off at Peachtree Middle School this morning for track practice. She has not been seen since. “Cathy” is 5’03” and approximately 125 pounds. She was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, black cotton shorts and white tennis shoes. She has brown eyes and dark brown hair.

National Night Out (and entering autos at Perimeter Mall)

Good Afternoon Everyone,

 

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer this year. 

 

I would like to invite everyone out to Target, 100 Perimeter Center Place, in reference to National Night Out.  The 27^th annual NNO will be held on Tuesday, August 3^rd in the Target parking lot(6-9PM).  The Dunwoody Police and the DeKalb Fire Department will be in attendance.  They will also have food for everyone to enjoy.  Also, if you plan on having a NNO in your neighborhood, please let me know.  I will have an officer come out and speak to your community. 

 

Just a side note.  We have had a rash of entering autos around the Perimeter Mall area recently.  We made an arrest last week on an individual that was still in the area (victims property in hand).  The suspect(s) would case the area and find the cars with laptops and GPS units exposed. If he was confronted, he claimed that he was raising money for his “football team”.  They will obviously take a donation for their fake team, so if someone does ask you, please call us to come out.  If he was not confronted, he would go back, break out the window, and take the property.  He was breaking out the window with a “spring loaded window punch”.  They are extremely quiet!

From a neighboring watch captain: NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY ALERT - 3:30 P.M., 7/9/10

BE ON THE LOOKOUT!
I have just been notified by a most reliable source that there was a white van, Tag #BLY8133, containing three (3) black males, cruising Forrestal Drive taking pictures of individual houses with a cell phone. 
When approached by the resident, they became very belligerent.  They made a second pass taking pictures of the same houses a second time. 
DeKalb County and Chamblee Police have been notified.  The DeKalb  County Police were in the neighborhood within five minutes of being notified.  A DeKalb Officer committed to keep me in the information loop should he or other officers in the immediate area make contact with the van itself.
If I receive additional information, I will forward it to you immediately.  If you receive no further information, the van has abandoned our neighborhood.
Folks, this serves as a good example of how we as neighbors should be working to cover each others "blind side".  Action like this makes us "own our neighborhood" and we can build a reputation for being a place where criminals can't succeed.

DPD Update: Attempted burglary

Hello everyone,

                I wanted to share an incident and some safety tips with you. On Monday we had an attempted burglary where the suspect rang the door bell and, upon not hearing a response, went to the rear of the house and broke out a window to enter. A resident was at the house and called 911 and the suspect fled the scene. This is a common M.O. for burglars to use. They will knock or ring the doorbell to see if anyone is at home. If no one responds, they assume the house is empty. Please pass on to your residents, that if they are at home and someone knocks or rings the doorbell, to make contact with them somehow. I would recommend leaving the door closed and talking to the person thru the door. If the resident is extremely suspicious of the person, they can call 911 immediately and then speak to the person. They may even want to say something such as “I’m not interested, I’ve called the police and you need to leave”.

                The residents should call 911 to report someone like this. They should try to get as accurate of a description as possible to include: age, sex, race, height, weight, clothing, hats, identifying marks. This will allow our officers to stop the person if they encounter them.

Scam Alert from DPD

Hello Everyone

I received the e-mail below about another scam that is occurring in the area. Please pass out to your neighborhoods and tell them to be on the lookout. Call 911 if you are approached by these two females.

Thursday June 3, 2010 @ 1:35 pm I came out of T. J. Max on Ashford Center West.

I opened my car with my remote, only the drivers door opens, had my purse close to my body under my right arm. Non descript South American middle age, don't think she was Mexican asked me, "Where you get your shoes." I looked down, said, "On line, Zappos.com.." She said, "Very Cute". She came closer, was much smaller than I am though I am 72 and my back was hurting so perhaps I looked frail.

She then asked me where was the closest major post office. I started to direct her to the post office in the Wal-Mart shopping center. She then produced a nylon fabric zip top wallet with a plastic window on one side. It looked like a Fed Ex mailing Label with the addressee International Clearing House Zone 12. Everything else in the address was numbers and dashes.

She said I found this by my car. I asked inside and they didn't want to help me.

I asked if she had looked inside. She said no. I was holding the wallet, the pull tap was missing, I just had a manicure and was in a hurry. I opened it. There was a stack of what looked like $100.00 bills. I said "We need to call the police and reached for my cell phone in my pocketbook under my right arm. About this time another female, black 30 to 35 well dressed, hair slicked back approached from the front of my car, said "Don't Call the police. My brother is a police and they will just keep it.

I was late for an appointment. I opened the wallet again, now a $1.00 was on top, the woman who "Worked for a bank" said, There's probably $500.00 there. There's a Fed Ex office and pointed to it, the first woman said I am going to call my husband and disappeared. The second woman who "who worked for a bank" asked me where I banked, I told her I didn't know her well enough to share that information, I was late for an appointment got in my car and left.

Fortunately she did not fall for the scam! If it just doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t!! They will ask you to withdraw more money from your account and then split the rest. The amount in their wallet is not what they say it is. Be On The LookOut!!

DPD Update

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

I have been receiving some positive feedback from the “Police to Citizen” portal.  I am sure it has been very informative. 

 

I wanted to pass on a few things that should be of interest to you:

 

Our speed trailer has been down for a few weeks.  We were receiving some inaccurate readings, so we sent it back to the manufacturer for repair.  We want to make sure that we are giving you the most accurate information possible.  I know that we have had some requests pending for some time, so please bear with us.  I will let you know when it gets back.

 

Let me know if you need more NW signs in your neighborhood.  I have a bunch in storage that I would like to get distributed!

 

There was a report of a white pickup truck that followed a 12 year old female yesterday in the area of Womack and Village Creek Drive.  It was occupied by a white male that was staring at her and driving very slowly.  Please remember to have your kids walk in groups, or escort them yourself.  If they see something suspicious, have them call 911 with a good description. 

 

There has been a report of another scam in the rental/real estate area.  Please read below:

 

Wanted to alert you to a scam going around in the rental/real estate arena.  Folks posing as home owners are copying material from true listing then listing them separately on another website.  The prospective tenant/home owner reaches out to the listing and is engaged by this scam artist who tells them one of several stories.  On the rental side, they indicate that money is not as important as finding a good person to take care of their home and they drop the rental amount by a few hundred dollars.  The listing will be lavishly written, sometimes, telling the tenant the utilities are included, a computer is already set up with internet, the kitchen is full stocked with utencils, etc.  In these cases it's easier to tell.  Further, all you have to do is send the deposit to them, as they are now located overseas temporarily, and they will send you the keys and contract.  Mind you, there are some very telling signs but sometimes there is not.  I have learned that folks have even met the prospective buyers at the home, then tell them some story about how the key isn't working but if they are interested they will take the deposit check with them and will meet them later with the key. 

 

Please be aware of a scam like this if you are selling or leasing a home!!

 

I have also seen an increase of thefts occurring from potential Craigslist buyers.  If you decide to sell an item on this web-site, and agree to meet them, BE CAREFUL!  We have had several thefts from unsuspecting sellers.  The seller will meet the potential buyer in a populated place.  The buyer will snatch the merchandise and flee the area.

FIRE ON SPRINGFIELD (gas grill tank)

FYI,

 Last night around 7PM, residents on Springfield had a problem with their propane tank while trying to grill outside.  The fire dept is analyzing the tank.  It was not any fault of the homeowner. There was significant damage to the home.

 

I am told that it took supposedly about 7 minutes for the fire dept to respond.

 

Everyone exited the home safely.

Wires Down on Wickford last week

There were some concerns about the response of the firemen after a tree fell on Wickford. Here is the info that I rec'd from the Asst. Chief.  Hope this helps alleviate some concerns folks had.

 

I have researched the 911 call and have the following information that has been recorded in the CAD system.

7:42 was the time from the 911 call placed to the time E18 was on scene.

5:35 was the time from verbal dispatch of fire unit until it went on scene.

Fire Rescue Units were on scene for 196 minutes and 2 seconds.

Car theft Mt Vernon Way

I just wanted to pass on the news that we had a car stolen from our driveway Thursday night.  It was our son's car, an old Honda Accord.  He can't remember if he had it locked.  There was no sign of forced entry.  It stinks!
