Incident: Robbery Arrest
Date: 12/28/2010
Location: 4570 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., Dunwoody, GA. 30346

The Dunwoody Police Department arrested 41 year old Maurice Patrick Hayes, for a Robbery that occurred outside of the Wells Fargo, located at 4570 Ashford Dunwoody Road. The victim, a 24 year old Dunwoody resident, was approached by Hayes at the Best Buy on Hammond Drive around 1400 hours. Hayes offered to sell the victim a laptop computer, so the two drove over to the Wells Fargo and the victim withdrew money.

Hayes ordered the victim into his van, took an undisclosed amount of cash, and handed over two laptop computers. During the incident, Hayes indicated that he had a firearm in his waistband.

Hayes ordered the victim out of the van, and he drove off. The victim immediately realized the computers were fake, so he called 911.

Hayes has been charged with Robbery (F), and is being held at the DeKalb County Jail. A warrant has also been issued for Carl Johnson, an accomplice that was with Hayes. Carl Johnson has not been located.

Dunwoody Police Press Release

Incident: Armed Robbery

Location: 4498 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd / The Best Bank
Date: December 21, 2010

 

On December 21, 2010 at approximately 10:45 a.m. the Dunwoody Police Department and the FBI responded to an armed robbery at the Best Bank located at 4498 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd. Upon arrival Dunwoody officers discovered the suspect had fled on foot towards Cotillion Dr. Bank employees advised the suspect approach the counter and demanded cash. The suspect brandished a handgun and then fled the scene on foot towards Cotillion Dr with an undetermined amount of cash. Dunwoody Police Detectives are actively working with the FBI in regards to this robbery. The suspect may be involved in three additional bank robberies in the metro Atlanta area.

The suspect is a black male approximately 6'2-6'4 weighing 220-250 lbs dressed in all black clothing and is armed with a black semi automatic handgun. This message is from a Sandy Springs resident-
 
Yesterday I had a frantic driver flag me down at a traffic light. He was on my passenger side honking & waving. He told me that my 'wheel' was falling off my front passenger side. He said he worked for Hennessey Lexus and had the tool in his truck to fix it. He said pull over and he would fix it, warned me that I would not make it a few more blocks. He was in a new truck (Ford) with a cardboard dealer tag & Very insistent that I pull over for my own safety.

I thanked him and turned around to get to my dealer to look at the car. As I got out of my car at the dealer & asked the service rep about my car, 'he' repeated 'my' story & said I was the 3rd driver in with that story this week. The Dealer had not reported this to the police yet. I called Roswell police, went & filed a report. This guy is apparently also employed by Cherokee Ford, Nalley Toyota, and several other Dealership.
 
Please be careful & please alert your parents, kids, friends, The police have been looking for this guy, call ASAP if he approaches you. A light skinned African American, heavyset, middle aged.

Abbott Homicide Investigation Update

Incident:  Homicide
Date:  July 1, 2010

Location:  1962 Peeler Road Dunwoody, GA.  30346

 

The Dunwoody Police Department continues to investigate the tragic deaths of Roger and Dorothy Abbott who were murdered in their home on July 1, 2010.  The Dekalb County Fire Department responded to a fire at their home on Peeler Rd and their bodies were subsequently discovered.  Detectives with the Dunwoody Police Department have worked tirelessly on the case since the beginning.  The department has worked closely with other agencies, including the ATF, Sandy Springs Police Department, FBI and GBI in our efforts to catch the person or persons responsible for this crime.

 

At this time, there is no evidence which suggests this crime was random.  Instead, the evidence gathered suggests the victim's may have known the suspect or suspects.  During the course of this investigation, Detectives collected and processed evidence, followed leads and conducted interviews.  A witness was located who saw a white male between the ages of 40-45, sandy red to brown hair,  slim to medium build, average height wearing a light colored T-shirt, walking in the front yard of the Abbott's home the morning of the murders. At this time, we have identified a person of interest in this case.  Because of the sensitive nature of this investigation, we are not naming this person of interest at this time.  However, we are moving forward with our investigation and will continue to work toward arresting the suspect or suspects responsible.

 

We recognize the reluctance of witnesses, particularly ones associated with a Homicide investigation, to come forward.  Witnesses may be reluctant to come forward for a variety of reasons.  They may be apprehensive, may not want anyone to know they spoke to the police or just may not want to get involved.  As a result, the Dunwoody Police Department acquired "TipSoft", a web based program for citizen's to leave anonymous tips On-Line, or through text messaging via their cell phone.  The program is available by accessing our web-site, www.dunwoodypolice.com and click on "SUBMIT A CRIME TIP".    You may also access "TipSoft" through www.crimereports.com.  If you submit a tip on-line, you will be provided your own unique identification number so you can check the status of your tip at a later time.   If you plan to submit a tip with your cell phone, you will text "DPDTIPS and your message" to 274637(CRIMES).  Once you send the message, you will receive a confirmation text. 

 

Once a tip is submitted, it will automatically be sent to the Dunwoody Police.  These tips are confidential, encrypted, and completely anonymous.  The technology routes all messages through a server that encrypts cell phone numbers before they reach the police.  The program also allows an encrypted, two-way dialogue between the tipster and the police.

 

Do not submit any emergency tips on-line.  If it is an emergency, please call 911.

 

We believe that unknown person or persons have information about this case which could help us solve it.  We ask that this person or persons come forward and contact our department immediately by calling us or contact us anonymously through our web tip or text tip program.

Dunwoody PD Investigating Homicide

The Dunwoody Police Department is currently investigating a shooting that occurred at 5493 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA. The victim, later identified as 36 year old Russell Sneiderman, dropped off his child at Dunwoody Prep. As he was getting into his car to leave, he was approached by a white male with a gun. The suspect began firing, and struck the victim multiple times. The suspect left the scene in a silver minivan with no license plate. He was last seen traveling westbound on Mt. Vernon Parkway. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30's, 5'10"-5'11" with a beard.
 
Mr. Sneiderman was transported to the Atlanta Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The shooting occurred in the parking lot outside of Dunwoody Prep.
 
The children and staff were not injured, and they did not witness the incident take place.

Dunwoody Police Recent News Update

   
The Dunwoody Police department is once again doing its part to bring Christmas cheer to many special children in Dunwoody with the second annual Christmas for Kids program. Christmas for Kids began with an idea to help Dunwoody's less fortunate children by making their Christmases a little brighter. This year, the Dunwoody Police Department and Dunwoody community will be collecting new and unwrapped toys, for children from newborn to fifteen years old, and invite them to a private Christmas festival where Santa and all his helpers will come together to personally give out those toys and gifts.
 
"Christmas for Kids brings Dunwoody law enforcement, city employees, local businesses, and the community together to help bring a smile to the face of a child who might otherwise have little to smile about during the holiday season", said Billy Grogan, Dunwoody Chief of Police. "It is our opportunity to think about the welfare of others, rather than ourselves."
The Christmas season for 2010 is quickly approaching, and there are still families in Dunwoody who will benefit from this program. The Police Department is asking the Dunwoody community to begin thinking about the holiday season a little early this year.
 
"Christmas for Kids is one of many special events in Dunwoody that showcases the warmth and generosity of this community," said Officer Fidel Espinoza, Dunwoody Police Department. "Christmas for Kids brought our community together to bring so much joy to many deserving children. It is a pleasure to once again reach Dunwoody's less fortunate children and make their Christmas a little brighter."
 
Last year, the community stepped up and enabled Christmas for Kids to help over 60 children and their families. The goal this year will be to help those families and then some. Advisory Message from Sandy Springs Police Department

 

The burglary suspect in the Branches area of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody, Jordan Zachary, who was driving the black Ford Expedition, has been arrested. He turned himself in. Please continue to call 911 when you see suspicious activity in your area.  This information is from David Johns of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Twin Branch Burglaries: Be on the Lookout for two identified cars...

On October 6, the Sandy Springs Police Department reported they have had a high number of burglaries in the Twin Branch subdivision. This is just south of Dunwoody limits on Mt. Vernon Hwy - it cuts through all the way to Spalding Drive and comes out near Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. Residents have reported seeing two cars:  A 2001 Dodge Stratus with Georgia tag AHX2619 and a 2002 Honda Odyssey with Georgia tag AEX5885. There are no warrants for the registered owners yet. Our own Dunwoody Police Department asks that if you see either of these vehicles, or anyone acting suspicious, please call 911 to have an officer check them out.

 

From Dunwoody Police Department: Interactive Defense Roll-Out

                 The Dunwoody Police Department (DPD) would like to inform you of a new system that was rolled out to the City residents on 10/4/2010. The DPD has been testing Interactive Defense, which is a web based program that will greatly increase the communication between the Dunwoody Police and the citizens of Dunwoody. Some of the highlights of this program are:
 

·         Individual accounts for every resident to receive emails directly from Dunwoody Officers.

 

·         Residents will receive wanted person, missing person and suspicious person lookouts directly to their email or text messages. If someone has information, they can share it, anonymously if they choose to, directly with the detective/officer that is handling the case.

 

·         Residents will be able to enter and maintain their own vacation watches for their homes. These requests will go directly to the officers on the street. Residents will have the option of receiving text message or email alerts as the officers are able to check their home.

 

·         Residents can enter their serial numbers into their "File Cabinet" which stores them into a secure database. This information can be recalled later, by the owner, from any internet connection. This is extremely useful in cases such as burglary/theft (for police reports), fire or storm damage (for insurance reports).

 

·         Residents will be able to communicate with each other across the city and build their own "community" sites, if interested, for their neighborhoods.

 

Dunwoody is the first city in the nation to utilize this system. It is believed it will increase the amount of information that can be released to the residents without endless emails being passed around from neighbor to neighbor. Everyone will know the information is current because they will receive it directly from the Dunwoody Police Department. If the resident chooses to receive text messages, then they will receive the information as quickly as it is entered into the system.

 

This program will be rolled out in phases so not all of the features are available yet. There are also plans for more features to be added to the program.

Be On the Lookout (BOLO) Update

Since 9/22/2010, the Dunwoody Police Department (DPD) has been searching for suspects (one White male and three Black males) in a black Ford Expedition, Georgia Tag 1178 YH who have committed multiple burglaries in the area. The driver has been identified as Jordan Zachary. Detective Boyer has obtained warrants on this subject for the burglaries. The DPD asks everyone to remain vigilant in their awareness. If you see suspicious vehicles or people in your neighborhood, please call 911 to have an officer check them out. The DPD has stated they will notify everyone when Zachary is in custody and/or when they have more details.

Online program lets Dunwoody residents report problems

 
Dunwoody has joined a pilot program with an outside website that lets citizens and businesses in the city report non-emergency problems online.
 

The SeeClickFix.com site takes reports of potholes, graffiti or traffic safety issues and places them on a map for everyone to see. The site allows anyone to create watch areas for themselves, that will alert them by e-mail when new issues are reported.

The Dunwoody Police Department is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency and Safe Kids Georgia to conduct Operation Pill Drop. This is a prescription drug take-back event where the public can dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to keep them out of the wrong hands. "Prescription drug abuse is the Nation's fastest-growing drug problem, and take-back events like this one are an indispensable tool for reducing the threat that the diversion and abuse of these drugs pose to public health," said Director of National Drug Control Policy Gil Kerlikowske. "The Federal/state/and local collaboration represented in this initiative is key in our national efforts to reduce pharmaceutical drug diversion and abuse." On September 25th, we invite Dunwoody residents to bring their unwanted medication to the front lobby of our police department from 10AM-2PM, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 100.
 
We cannot accept needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment and hydrogen peroxide. Unintentional poisoning from prescription medications is on the rise. Every year, over 2 million poison exposures are reported in the United States. In 2009, over 51% of reported poisonings in Georgia involved children ages 5 and under. Operation Pill Drop offers the public a free and convenient option for disposing of their prescription and over-the-counter medications to protect their families and the environment.

Dunwoody PD Press Release: Aggravated Assault

Location: Northchase Apts., 6800 Peachtree Ind. Blvd., Dunwoody, GA.
 
The Dunwoody Police Department is currently investigating an Aggravated Assault that occurred at the Northchase Apartments, 6800 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The incident occurred at approximately 01:46 hours. Two females were approached by a black male outside their apartment. When the suspect pulled out a pistol, the two fled inside the apartment. The suspect followed them in, and was confronted by the resident, 50 year old Keith Holt. The suspect fired his pistol twice, striking Mr. Holt once in the leg. He was transported to Grady Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The suspect was a black male, 30-35 years of age, shaved head/bald, wearing a white T-Shirt and baggy blue jeans. He was armed with a black revolver. He was last seen getting in to a navy blue Ford Mustang and fleeing the scene. There was also a passenger in the car. The Dunwoody Police Department is searching for Torrence D. Booker (aliases: "T-Time" and "Chico"), accused of using a vehicle stolen out of Dunwoody to transport other stolen items from other car break-ins and burglaries to various pawn shops. The suspect is described as being male, Black, 5'11", 195 pounds, with a tattoo on the right arm ("Jesus"), tattoo on the left arm looks like "Sales", and tattoo on left chest. Armed Robbery, Chase Bank at Publix Shopping Center

Incident: Armed Robbery

Location: 5552 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Dunwoody, GA

Date: 073010

The Dunwoody Police Department is investigating an Armed Robbery that occurred at the Chase Bank, 5552 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, at approximately 1015 hours this morning.

Four black males entered the bank and demanded money. Two of the males were armed with pistols, and one was armed with an assault rifle. All of them were wearing dark clothing, ski masks and plastic bags over their hands. They were between 5’5”-5’10”. They left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

Missing Person Has Returned

I just want to extend a sincere “Thank You” to everyone that responded to the e-mail that I sent out last week.  I had numerous offers for search parties, calling posts, etc… 

 

I just wanted to let you know that she has returned and that foul play is not suspected.  The case remains under investigation.

Incident: Missing Person Location: 4664 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, GA. Date: 072210

 

The Dunwoody Police Department is trying to locate a missing teenage girl that was last seen at 0700 hours this morning. Catherine Hoyos, a 15 year old white female, was dropped off at Peachtree Middle School this morning for track practice. She has not been seen since. “Cathy” is 5’03” and approximately 125 pounds. She was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, black cotton shorts and white tennis shoes. She has brown eyes and dark brown hair.

National Night Out (and entering autos at Perimeter Mall)

Good Afternoon Everyone,

 

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer this year. 

 

I would like to invite everyone out to Target, 100 Perimeter Center Place, in reference to National Night Out.  The 27^th annual NNO will be held on Tuesday, August 3^rd in the Target parking lot(6-9PM).  The Dunwoody Police and the DeKalb Fire Department will be in attendance.  They will also have food for everyone to enjoy.  Also, if you plan on having a NNO in your neighborhood, please let me know.  I will have an officer come out and speak to your community. 

 

Just a side note.  We have had a rash of entering autos around the Perimeter Mall area recently.  We made an arrest last week on an individual that was still in the area (victims property in hand).  The suspect(s) would case the area and find the cars with laptops and GPS units exposed. If he was confronted, he claimed that he was raising money for his “football team”.  They will obviously take a donation for their fake team, so if someone does ask you, please call us to come out.  If he was not confronted, he would go back, break out the window, and take the property.  He was breaking out the window with a “spring loaded window punch”.  They are extremely quiet!
