The Dunwoody Police Department is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to conduct another National Prescription Drug Take Back event. This is a prescription drug take-back program where the public can dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to keep them out of the wrong hands. "We are pleased at the response of the American people once again, and we thank them for participating and contributing to the battle against prescription drug abuse," said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart, who added that 4,268 agencies participated with DEA nationwide in Saturday's event. "While a uniform system for prescription drug disposal is being finalized, we will continue to sponsor these important take-back opportunities as a service to our communities. Our take-back events highlight the problems related to prescription drug abuse and give our citizens an opportunity to contribute to the solution. These events are only made possible through the dedicated work and commitment of our state, federal, local, and tribal partners and DEA thanks each and every one of them for their efforts on behalf of the American people."

On Saturday, September 29th, we invite Dunwoody resident's to bring their unwanted medication to the front lobby of our police department from 10AM-2PM, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 100. We cannot accept needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment and hydrogen peroxide.

Operation Pill Drop offers the public a free and convenient option for disposing of their prescription and over-the-counter medications to protect their families and the environment.

Citizens have responded well to the effort of trying to keep these expired drugs out of the hands of children. The Dunwoody Police would like to thank all of the citizens who participated in and supported this effort.

National Night Out, Perimeter Target, August 7th 6-8PM

The Dunwoody Police Department is partnering with Target for the 29th Annual National Night Out event on August 7th, 2012. "National Night Out is a unique crime and drug prevention program that is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch". This will be the 4th year that the Dunwoody Police have participated in this program. Last year over 15,325 communities and 37 million people nationwide participated in National Night Out.
National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.


This year, Target will be handing out Frisbees as door prizes. There will be food and dessert served outside in the parking lot between 6PM-8PM. The Dunwoody Police will also have special equipment on display. This would be a great opportunity for the citizens to interact with members of the department and also have their photograph or children's photograph taken with a Dunwoody Police Officer.
 
The Dunwoody Police Department will also be offering CarFit®, a program helping mature drivers find their perfect fit. Developed through collaboration among the American Society on Aging, AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, CarFit is the first program to offer older adults the opportunity to check

how their personal cars "fit" them.


The Society of Former FBI Agents, in conjunction with the Dunwoody Police Department, is participating in the National Child Identification Program, and will distribute child ID kits at the police department's booth. The kits are free and will allow parents to take and retain their child's fingerprints and a DNA sample, as well as to record detailed identifying information. This is more suitable for children age 4 and up.

National Drug Take-Back Day, April 28

Have old, unused prescriptions that you want to get rid of?

The Drug Enforcement Administration is holding a National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday.

Dunwoody residents can go to the Dunwoody Police or the DeKalb Police departments which will both host drop-off sites, according to the DEA's locator for participating agencies.

People can drop off unused prescriptions at the Dunwoody Police Department headquarters (41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 100)  from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or the DeKalb County Police North Precinct (4453 Ashford Dunwoody Rd). The prescription drugs will be logged in and turned over to the DEA for proper disposal. 

The national program, part of a highly successful national campaign, collected 377,086 pounds of pharmaceuticals in October 2011.

Be On The Lookout (BOLO) Alert - 4/17/2012

     A burglary occurred yesterday, 04/16/12 at approximately 1405hrs at the Towne homes located  4101 Dunwoody Club Dr, #31. The witness described the suspect as the following:

 

·         B/M with a medium complexion

·         Approximately 6' tall

·         Short black hair

·         Unknown on facial hair

·         No distinguishing facial characteristics

·         Broad shouldered and muscular

·         Wearing an athletic type white short sleeve shirt (it appeared to be heavier than an undershirt) that hung below the waist,

·         Khaki pants

·         Unknown shoes

·         Unknown if wearing gloves

·         Suspect was carrying a white sac (large pillow case, laundry bag, etc) with items inside of it. He threw it in the back seat when confronted by the witness.

 

The vehicle is described as follows:

·         Gray Honda (model is newer than 1999 but not current day new)

·         No tint

·         Unknown if any damage to the car

·         Possible GA tag of BJJ-8886. This comes back to an unknown color 2010  Volkswagon Jetta out of Rome, GA. Witness wasn't sure if the tag was BJ or BJJ and 8886 or 886.

Update from Dunwoody PD: Vandalism at Brook Run Park

Update: 4/17/2012
Damage to Property/ Community Garden at Brook Run Park 
Location: 4770 N Peachtree Rd. Dunwoody, GA.

During the overnight hours of March 30th-31st at Brook Run Park, vandals broke into and caused substantial damage to the community garden, including the destruction of food that was to be donated to a local food bank. The Dunwoody Police have identified and charged five juveniles for the damage caused that night. The five juveniles, four Dunwoody residents and one Roswell resident, were released to the custody of their parents. An anonymous individual came forward to inform investigators about the persons responsible for the damage that occurred on 03/31/12.


"A group of teenagers decided to go to Brook Run Park after hours. One thing led to another and now all five of them are charged with Criminal Damage to Property, a felony. I can't stress enough about how important it is for teenagers to think about the consequences of their actions before they do something like this. Actions have consequences and as you get older the consequences become more severe. This is a great opportunity for parents to engage their teenager in a conversation about decision making that may help them make better decisions in the future" said Chief Billy Grogan.


All five have been charged with Criminal Damage to Property 2nd Degree (F).

Two Alerts from Dunwoody Police, 2/20/2012

Monday, 2/20/2012:

Two alerts from the Dunwoody Police:

1.  A beige 4DR Honda, tinted windows, with an "Auburn" sticker on the bottom left of the rear windshield.  Vehicle followed a 19 year old babysitter and the 5 year old around while they were riding bikes around 16:30 hours (2/19/12).

 

2. Juvenile  female (10) walking her dog on Meadowcreek Dr near Wyntercreek Way at approx. 16:20 hours (2/19/12) was approached by an unknown Hispanic male driving a pale blue passenger style mini-van. The H/M drove slowly along the road where the juvenile was walking. He stopped and asked how old she was. The juvenile quickly ran into an open neighbor's garage. The suspect drove off.  The juvenile described the H/M as being in 30-40 YOA, dark hair (military style) and wearing a dark blue shirt. He had a slight Hispanic accent.

 

On 2/20/12, the older blue mini-van (make unknown) was seen again in the neighborhood driving very slowly near Wyntercreek Way.  When approached, the vehicle backed into a driveway , then sped past them.  The vehicle has a temp tag and the driver was described as either a White or Hispanic Male and heavyset.  There was also a white magnet on the side of the van that says, Appliance Services. Call 911 if you see this van.

 

 

 

BOLO from Dunwoody Police

Incident: Homicide

Date: 12/26/2011 

Location: 100 Ashford Gables Drive, Dunwoody, GA.

The Dunwoody Police Department is investigating a Homicide that occurred at the Pointe at Perimeter Apartments located at 100 Ashford Gables Drive. The victim, identified as 32 year old Ivan Perez, was shot outside of building #8. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect is described as a black male. He was last seen leaving the entrance of the apartment complex towards Ashford Dunwoody Road. Through the course of our initial investigation, this appears that it was not a random shooting.

Police Seeking Assistance in Armed Robbery

Location: 1000 Ashwood Parkway Dunwoody, GA
 
On 12/13/11 Dunwoody Police arrested Phillip Redmond III, 21 yo of Douglasville, GA, after committing an armed robbery. Dunwoody Police Officers were dispatched to 1000 Ashwood Parkway, Walton Apartments, at 3:45 AM regarding an armed robbery that had just occurred. While officers were in route to the scene they observed a vehicle matching the description provided by the victim traveling south on Ashford Dunwoody Rd. Dunwoody officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 1997 tan Cadillac Deville bearing GA tag WI3T00. The vehicle initially stopped on the I285 west bound entrance ramp; however, before officers could approach the vehicle, the driver sped off onto I285. Officers pursued the vehicle along 285W as it exited Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.
Officers continued to pursue the vehicle through the City of Atlanta and it eventually turned into an apartment complex located at 4505 Fairburn Rd. The vehicle traveled to the rear of the complex, coming to a stop as it struck a telephone pole. Both the driver and the passenger fled the vehicle on foot and disappeared into the wood line; however, it is believed the suspects fled the area in a silver truck that left the area at a high rate of speed. Officers located items belonging to the victim in addition to a handgun and clothing items in which the victim indicated the suspects were wearing during the robbery inside of the Cadillac Deville.
 
During the course of the investigation it was determined that the victim had been followed to her apartment on a prior occasion by the tan Cadillac Deville after leaving work; however, the victim did not report this initial incident to police. On December 13th, as the victim arrived at her apartment complex, she was approached by two black males wearing all black clothing and had their faces covered by red bandanas. The males approached on both sides of her vehicle and both were armed with handguns. The suspects demanded the victim's purse and took every bag in her car. The suspects also demanded the victim open her trunk. The suspects fled on foot towards Crown Point Pkwy.
 
The first suspect was described as a black male, approximately 20-25 years of age, wearing a black hoodie, black jeans, wearing a red bandana that covered his face armed with a black handgun. The second suspect is described as a black male wearing all black clothing, wearing a red bandana that covered his face and was also armed with a handgun. Further investigation has revealed that Phillip King Redmond III was the driver of the Cadillac Deville. Redmond is currently at DeKalb County Jail. Redmond's accomplice has not yet been identified.

Dunwoody Police Press Release

Incident: Burglary
Date: 12/14/2011

Location: East Kings Point Circle Dunwoody, GA

The Dunwoody Police arrested three male subjects for burglary on Tuesday, December 13th. Police officers responded to the Dunwoody North Subdivision regarding a suspicious vehicle that was seen in the subdivision, occupied by a male subject. A witness was able to provide a tag number for a silver 2006 Audi A4. The vehicle was spotted and stopped by police shortly after arriving in the area. The driver, Corey Freeman 17 yo of Decatur, GA, was detained and further investigation revealed he had been waiting on two additional males who were burglarizing a residence nearby. Officers searched the area and located the two males, Dondre McDade 17 yo of Conley, GA and Emmanuel Lett 17 yo of Lithonia, GA. All three suspects were transported to Dunwoody Police Headquarters and interviewed. It was determined that Dunwoody Police interrupted a burglary in progress on E. Kings Point Circle due to the quick action of an alert witness who reported the vehicle driving around the subdivision. Freeman, McDade and Lett were transported to Dekalb Co Jail. Dunwoody Police recommend citizens call 911 to report any suspicious activity. The successful apprehension of these three criminal illustrates how a great relationship between citizens and their police department can make a difference in the community.

Armed Robbery - Bank of America, Perimeter Center East

Location: 1 Perimeter Center East, Dunwoody, GA. 30346
 
The Dunwoody Police Department responded to an armed robbery at the Bank of America located at 1 Perimeter Center East on 12/03/11. At approximately 1141 hours, the suspect entered the bank and handed the cashier a note demanding cash. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash heading East through the parking lot. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5'09"-6'00", 180-200 LBS, wearing a black hat, tan jacket and a black polo shirt. The suspect was also carrying a dark colored bag over his right shoulder. This suspect fits the same description from a previous bank robbery that occurred on 06/04/11 at that same location.

BOLO (Be On The Lookout) Alert from Dundoody Police 11/09/11

Be On The Look Out:
 
On 11/08/11 between 11am and 1pm there were two burglaries that occurred on Chateau Drive off Chamblee Dunwoody Rd. A witness in one of the cases reported seeing a black female and two black males occupying a black Chrysler Sebring knocking on their neighbor's door then looking into the windows and eventually making their way around the entire residence on Chateau Drive; however, the police were called after the subjects left the scene.
  
At approximately 1125 hours Officers checking the area located a forced entry burglary at a second residence on Chateau Drive. A large amount of jewelry and electronics were taken.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: BLACK FEMALE, AVERAGE HEIGHT, WEIGHT, LONG STRAIGHT BLACK HAIR POSSIBLY A WIG, APPROXIMATELY 30 YEARS OF AGE.

Christmas for Kids Program: Dunwoody Police Department

The Dunwoody Police Department is once again doing its part to bring Christmas cheer to many special children in Dunwoody with the third annual Christmas for Kids program. CFK began with an idea to help Dunwoody's less fortunate children by making their Christmas a little brighter. This year, the Dunwoody Police Department, local businesses, and the Dunwoody community will be working together to collect new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children from newborn to fifteen years old, and invite them to a private Christmas festival where the "magic" of Christmas will come alive with food, fun, and games. Of course, Santa and all his helpers will be there to personally deliver the gifts to each and every registered child.
 
"The Christmas for Kids program has proven to be a great success over the past two years and we look forward to another chance of working with the community to help bring some joy and laughter to local Dunwoody kids who really need it," said Billy Grogan, Dunwoody Chief of Police. "The tremendous support shown each year by our local businesses and community continues to give me great pride and gratitude to be a part of this City. It is our opportunity to think about the welfare of others, rather than ourselves."
 
"Christmas for Kids is one of many special events in Dunwoody that showcases the warmth and generosity of this community," said Sergeant Fidel Espinoza, Dunwoody Police Department. Dunwoody Police Seek Assistance Locating Bank Robber

The Dunwoody Police Department responded to an armed robbery at Regions Bank located at 1457 Mt. Vernon Rd around 10:15 AM. The suspect entered the bank demanding US Currency while brandishing a dark colored semi-automatic handgun. The suspect fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.
 
The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5'06-5'07, wearing a red baseball cap bearing a yellow stripe across the front, a gray long sleeve shirt button all the way up, blue jean Capri style shorts with a designer patch on the left leg. The suspect was carrying a blue bag on his left shoulder.

BOLO (Be On the Look Out) - 8/1/2011

 

Dunwoody Police responded to Verdon Forest Sub. in reference to a W/M asking two 11 year old girls if they needed a ride home. The suspect then asked the juveniles which house was theirs, what school they attended and their age. The juveniles ran when the suspect asked them to look at something in his vehicle. The suspect briefly followed the girls into the subdivision before turning around. No direction of travel given.

W/M in his 20's, brown hair, clean shaven, wearing a blue or navy shirt, driving a black newer model 4 door sedan with tinted windows and possibly black rims.

 

This occurred 7/31/11 around 5:30PM. 

 

We also had several mailboxes smashed over the weekend.  There were approximately 5 that were struck in the Dunwoody North Subdivision.  It occurred between the hours of 0230 and 0515 Sunday morning [7/31/11].  Possible Toyota P/U…

Dunwoody Police Adopts New Smart Phone Application, "MYPD"

The Dunwoody Police Department continuously seeks opportunities to use technology to facilitate and enhance the relationship we have with our community. Since beginning operations on April 1, 2009, the Dunwoody Police Department has been on the cutting edge of using social media to inform, educate and connect with our residents. The department currently has over 1,000 likes on Facebook, over 2,200 followers on Twitter and we use YouTube to post videos of interest to our community. In addition, the department uses Interactive Defense as a tool to connect with our Neighborhood Watch groups and have over 1,400 users. The department also has a robust website with many active visitors each day.
 
Although we are able to interact with many members of our community, we know there are others we have yet to reach. To that end, the Dunwoody Police Department is pleased to announce our new service with Wired Blue, LLC. Wired Blue, LLC has developed a police app for the iPhone and Android titled "MYPD" or "My Police Department". This app is currently available online as a free download. Community members can now download the app, click on the Dunwoody Police Department and use it to ask questions, submit tips, view our website, see current news, access our social media sites and access many other features all in one convenient location. This app leverages the popularity of smart phones in use today. "Many people in our community use smart phones. This app gives them an easy way to communicate with the Dunwoody Police Department, no matter where they are, and stay informed about our activity and keep track of items of interest", says Chief Billy Grogan. The "My Police Department" app is a great addition to the Dunwoody Police Department's arsenal of social media communication tools available to our community. We hope that future updates to the app will give our community even more access to other features like Chief Grogan's Blog and Twitter feed.

Burglary Arrests: Dunwoody Police Update

Incident: Burglary Arrests

Location: Dunwoody, GA.
 
The Dunwoody Police Department has arrested 30 year old Timothy Woznick, and 27 year old Michele Honaker for three separate Burglaries that occurred inside the city since July 11th. Officers were dispatched to Hallford Drive in reference to a residential burglary on July 25th. One of the officers spotted Woznick's vehicle, a blue Chrysler PT Cruiser, parked in the area. This vehicle was seen earlier in the week at another incident location. Woznick was interviewed and charged with 3 counts of Burglary(F). Honaker was charged with Theft by Receiving Stolen Property(F). We are currently working with other jurisdictions to determine if they committed any other burglaries outside the City of Dunwoody. They were both transported to the DeKalb County Jail.

Location: Perimeter Center West @ Ashford Dunwoody Rd
 
The Dunwoody Police Department arrested 45 year old Gregory Leitschuh, for the Robbery of the Fidelity Bank that occurred on June 29th 2011. Around 1040 hours, Leitschuh walked into the bank located at 135 Perimeter Center West and demanded cash. He was able to leave with an undisclosed amount of money. At approximately 0923 hours on July 28th, Officer Jason Lewis conducted a traffic stop on Leitschuh's vehicle at the intersection of Perimeter Center West and Ashford Dunwoody Road for an expired tag. Officer Lewis recognized the driver as matching the description of the Fidelity Bank robbery suspect. Through further investigation, the driver admitted to committing the Robbery last month. A weapon, an exploded dye pack, and some money were located inside the vehicle. Leitschuh was placed under arrest and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
